- Responding to reports of vehicle tampering and attempted burglary, four officers confronted Ruiz, who fled on a bicycle before a physical struggle ensued where officials say Ruiz "brandished a knife and injured" Baitinger-Peterson.
- Before the shooting, two other officers attempted to use a Taser on Ruiz "without success," while Baitinger-Peterson, with nearly 11 years of experience, fired the fatal shots as bystanders captured the struggle on cellphone video.
- All four involved officers were placed on paid administrative leave pending the state investigation. City workers cleared a protest encampment at the shooting site last Tuesday, resulting in several arrests.
- Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, representing the Ruiz family, has called for charges against the officer. Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway plans to include funding for body-worn cameras in the next budget for the Madison Police Department.
