As Bradley Creek wildfire near Vernon subsides, hundreds still on evacuation order

Recovery work continues as TELUS crews and BC Hydro restore services while inspectors assess damage to homes that remain unsafe, officials said.

  • On Wednesday, Aug. 26, the Okanagan Indian Band reported that 248 homes remain on evacuation order following the Bradley Creek wildfire. The remaining order reflects properties most severely affected by the blaze, said Josh Winquist, the band's communications manager.
  • Forcing evacuations on Aug. 1, the Bradley Creek wildfire is now under control at 2,658 hectares. According to OKIB Chief Dan Wilson, the fire destroyed an estimated 230 homes during the emergency.
  • Infrastructure repairs along Westside Road by TELUS and Hydro are expected to continue for up to one month, though efforts are underway to complete the work sooner. The OKIB has created a re-entry guide to help residents address potential structural or water damage.
  • Before starting cleanup, residents are advised to contact insurance representatives, as most insurers have a 24-hour claims service. Residents should be as detailed as possible when providing information about damage.
  • To support mental health recovery, the OKIB suggests residents "Accept offers of help. Seek counselling or spiritual guidance." The band advises watching for warning signs like "Recurring thoughts or nightmares" if symptoms persist beyond two to four weeks.
