Artemis II is officially headed to the moon after test orbit around the Earth
The burn sent Orion on a roughly 10-day loop that will test manual flight, life-support systems and NASA’s path to a lunar landing.
- On Thursday, the Orion spacecraft successfully performed a translunar injection burn, jettisoning 6,700 pounds of propellant and providing 6,000 pounds of thrust to push the four-person crew beyond Earth orbit toward the Moon.
- Serving as a "dress rehearsal" for future lunar landings, NASA's Artemis mission marks the first time astronauts have traveled beyond Low Earth Orbit since the Apollo program concluded in 1972.
- Earlier in the mission, crew members navigated cold temperatures of 65 degrees Fahrenheit, requiring long-sleeved clothes while exercising on the spacecraft's flywheel device and observing Earth's coastlines.
- Currently on a ten-day journey, the four-person crew is traversing about 246,000 miles to reach the Moon's sphere of influence, with a Pacific Ocean splashdown scheduled for April 10.
- Upcoming Artemis missions will utilize data from this flight to perform manual close-range maneuvering and docking with a Human Landing System , enabling a crewed moon landing by 2028.
