Arrests made over Oxfordshire's supersized illegal rubbish dump
- On Thursday, officers arrested two men in connection with illegal tipping near the River Cherwell in Kidlington, involving a 150m waste mountain beside the A34.
- Discovered in July, the pile is estimated to weigh around 21,000 tonnes between the River Cherwell and the A34, comprising shredded household materials including plastics, tyres and polystyrene.
- On Thursday, SEROCU officers arrested a 69-year-old man in Andover and a 54-year-old man in Slough, both released on bail after charges related to environmental and money laundering offences.
- The EA said it will seek to recover the clean-up costs under the Proceeds of Crime Act, as work began earlier this month with a private waste clearance firm contracted for 9.6m at a cost of £9.6m.
- The case highlights a national problem of illegal tips, with 517 illegal dumps across England and at least 11 sites over 20,000 tonnes; organised crime gangs profit by undercutting licensed operators, and the government pledges more funds and tougher checks.
