Around 29,000 lightning strikes light up sky across southern England
London Fire Brigade responded to more than 400 flood calls as thunderstorms brought lightning, flooded roads and suspended rail services.
On Tuesday, June 23, 2026, violent thunderstorms swept across southern England, waking residents with torrential rain and intense lightning as the storm system moved eastward through the South East overnight.
Meteorologists attributed the dramatic weather to a classic 'thundery breakdown' following days of soaring temperatures, as hot, humid conditions created an unstable atmosphere packed with energy.
Around 7,000 strikes were recorded over 24 hours, while heavy rain caused flash flooding at Heathrow and on the Elizabeth line, forcing the London Fire Brigade to respond to over 400 calls.
The Met Office issued a rare Red Extreme Heat Warning for Wednesday and Thursday, warning temperatures could reach at least 39C as health officials cautioned the extreme spell poses risks to everyone.
Weather experts warned that climate change is increasing the likelihood of such intense rainfall and heatwaves, positioning the UK for increasingly extreme weather events as global temperatures rise.
