Around 2,000 visitors compete, take in 25th annual Penticton Dragon Boat Festival
More than 2,000 racers and close to 80 teams are competing at the festival, which first began in 2001.
- On Saturday, Sept. 12, more than 2,000 racers hit Skaha Lake to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Penticton Dragon Boat Festival, marking a quarter-century milestone for the popular end-of-summer competition.
- Hosted by Penticton Paddle Sports, the festival was first held in 2001. Race director Don Mulhall said the event is "great for the city, great for the paddling community, and it moves the community forward."
- Close to 80 teams from across Western Canada are competing this weekend, with 90 per cent of attendees from out of town. Six Penticton-based teams comprise about 200 local paddlers.
- Numbers-Wise, the festival ranks second in Western Canada behind Vancouver for dragon boat events. This year marks the first international expansion, with teams from Montana competing in several races.
- The festival concludes Sunday, Sept. 13, serving as an end-of-season celebration for paddlers. Competitors travel from as far as Edmonton and Kitimat to access the freshwater lake location.
