Indian Navy Gets First Shallow Water Anti-Submarine Warships
VISAKHAPATNAM, JUN 18 – INS Arnala features over 80% indigenous content and advanced anti-submarine systems, marking a key step in India's self-reliance and coastal defence enhancement, officials said.
- On June 18, 2025, the Indian Navy inducted INS Arnala, the nation’s inaugural Anti-Submarine Warfare vessel specifically developed and manufactured domestically for operations in shallow coastal waters, at the Visakhapatnam dockyard under the Eastern Naval Command.
- INS Arnala’s commissioning follows its delivery on May 8, 2025, and results from a partnership between Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers and L&T Shipyard to enhance indigenous naval capabilities.
- The 77-metre, over 1,490-tonne warship is equipped for underwater surveillance, search and rescue, low intensity maritime operations, ASW in coastal waters, and advanced mine-laying, and is propelled by a diesel engine-waterjet system.
- The Indian Navy described the delivery of Arnala as a key achievement in its efforts to enhance domestic shipbuilding capabilities, aligning with the government's goal of self-reliance by incorporating more than 80 percent indigenous components.
- This commissioning marks a significant step in India’s transition from a buyer to a builder navy, boosting shallow water anti-submarine capabilities and reflecting the country's rich maritime heritage through the warship's name.
