Army grounds all Apache helicopter flights

The stand-down will remain until investigators determine the cause of the crash that killed two soldiers, Army officials said.

  • On Friday, the U.S. Army halted all AH-64 Apache training flights following a fatal crash Wednesday near Salado, Texas, that killed two Fort Hood soldiers assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division.
  • Chief Warrant Officer 2 Deontre T. Huey, 34, and Warrant Officer Seth L. Olmstead, 25, were conducting a maintenance test flight when their aircraft experienced a mishap at approximately 1:40 p.m. Wednesday.
  • The crash ignited the Dove Hollow Fire, which burned roughly 155 acres in Bell County before firefighters reached full containment Thursday. More than 200 firefighters from 22 agencies responded to contain the blaze.
  • A safety investigation team from the Army Combat Readiness Center at Fort Rucker, Alabama, is leading the inquiry into the crash's root cause. The stand-down remains in effect until investigators determine what happened.
  • This fatal accident follows several recent military aviation training mishaps across the services, including a B-52 Stratofortress crash and Navy EA-18G Growler midair collision. The Apache remains a core Army component, with more than 5,000 units fielded by the U.S. military and its allies since 1984.
