The army officer was arrested in flagrante during a police operation in La Libertad, after demanding money from the duer or a rest bar under threats, on the grounds that his superiors knew about his irregular activities.
Captain EP Gary Chiroque Barreno was assigned as chief of intelligence of the Unified Pataz Command (CUPAZ) to fight extortioners who swarm in the gold mining area, but the officer ended up becoming one of them. He used his position in the CUPAZ and public resources to threaten his victims, until one denounced him to the police.
