After an identical first operation in the region of Buenos Aires, north of Quito, it is now south of Ecuador that the military are attacking illegal mining in front of it. In a country where gold pays four times as much as cocaine, organized crime groups are fighting in the production areas. The State opposes it all the more as it is in the midst of an electoral campaign largely based on security issues.
In order to curb the expansion of illegal mining, a new military offensive is carried out by air and land in the area of La Chonta, in the Pucará canton, located about 120 kilometres from Cuenca, in the province of Azuay.
More than 1,500 soldiers intervened in the sector La Chonta, in Pucar , where the presence of Los Choneros is detected. The operations to land and areas seek to eradicate the economy as well as the quotations linked to organized crime.
