Armagh: Bus driver dies in crash involving school children

  • On February 17, a bus driver died at the scene after a school bus carrying 40 pupils overturned on Tullyah Road, Belleeks, County Armagh.
  • The private hire bus was travelling from St Paul's High School, Bessbrook towards Whitecross and came to rest on its side over a hedge on Tullyah Road; police crash-scene investigators remain at the scene while the PSNI probes the driver’s sudden death.
  • Within minutes the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service dispatched five ambulances, two advanced paramedics, one officer and an ambulance doctor, while eyewitnesses and first responders helped pupils escape through windows and the roof with no serious injuries.
  • The Education Authority said it is providing critical incident management support and its Critical Incident Response Team will be at the school on Wednesday to support pupils, while Quinn Coaches expressed deep sadness, confirmed the driver’s death, and said it is cooperating with authorities.
  • The road was closed for a period while emergency services—who were called shortly before 3:45pm—worked on scene and it has since re-opened.
