Europe Ariane 6 Rocket Launches a Weather Satellite
The satellite offers twice the precision of previous models and supports early warnings for extreme weather, helping protect lives and property, EUMETSAT said.
- Ariane 6 rocket launched for the third time on Tuesday night from Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou, carrying the four-tonne MetOp-SGA1 satellite.
- Developed over nearly a decade, Ariane 6 first launched in July 2024 and again on a commercial mission in March this year, reducing Europe's reliance on SpaceX.
- Achieving an 800 kilometre orbit, Arianespace reported spacecraft separation after 1 hour and 4 minutes, with Sion stating, 'The success of this second commercial launch confirms the performance, reliability, and precision of Ariane 6.'
- Following deployment, EUMETSAT will operate the satellite and distribute its data, providing earlier warnings to protect lives and property from extreme weather, and monitor climate variables.
- Looking ahead to climate monitoring expansion, Ariane company plans 32 launches from Kourou in coming years, including Europe's first contribution to the US-led Joint Polar System.
