Argentina - Forest Fires in Patagonia Continue to Spread: 15,000 Hectares of Land Destroyed
More than 500 firefighters and support personnel battle wildfires fueled by drought and winds, destroying over 15,000 hectares and forcing 3,000 tourists to evacuate, officials said.
- Sunday, wildfires in Argentine Patagonia blazed through nearly 12,000 hectares of scrubland and forests, raging across Chubut, Neuquén, Río Negro, Santa Cruz and southern Buenos Aires province.
- Weather conditions — high temperatures, strong winds and severe drought — fuelled the blazes, while Ignacio Torres, governor of Chubut province, said one large fire may have been set deliberately and announced a reward.
- Authorities evacuated about 3,000 tourists and 15 families from Puerto Patriada lake resort as more than 10 homes were destroyed and the Comarca Andina region, including Epuyén, El Bolsón, Lago Puelo and El Hoyo, faced damage.
- Nearly 500 personnel are on the ground with aerial support, including 295 firefighters and 15 aerial resources, with reinforcements expected from Córdoba and Chile, Manuel Adorni said Sunday.
- The current fires arrive one year after nearly 32,000 hectares burned in early 2025, and officials warned the next 48 hours would be critical as climate change worsens firefighting conditions.
