Application deadline for Minnesota elk licenses draws near
Minnesota increased elk harvest opportunities after aerial surveys showed higher counts, with 9 of 12 licenses reserved for antlerless animals.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources opened applications for 12 elk licenses, with hunters having until July 7 to apply for what the department calls a once-in-a-lifetime hunting opportunity.
Aerial surveys showed higher elk counts this year, prompting the Minnesota Department to increase harvest opportunities compared to numbers from last year.
For the first time since 2012, The Grygla herd is open for limited hunting, with two tags available for that specific zone.
A new electronic licensing system launched June 9, replacing a 20-year platform, which Paul Burr, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources' acting big-game program leader, said changes the application process.
Roughly 4,000 people typically apply for these limited hunts annually, and Burr noted the overall outlook for harvesting elk this season is promising despite the intense competition.
