OLED iMac in the Works, but Don't Hold Your Breath
Apple seeks 24-inch OLED panels with 218–220 PPI and ~600 nits brightness from Samsung and LG, targeting a 2029 launch for an OLED iMac with enhanced display quality.
- Apple recently requested Samsung Display and LG Display to produce 24-inch OLED panel samples for a future iMac using their mass-production facilities.
- Following successful OLED adoption in the Apple Watch, iPhone, and iPad, Apple is now progressing plans to integrate the display technology into a future iMac model.
- Apple specifically requested 600 nits of brightness and around 218 PPI, surpassing the current 500 nits LCD display in performance specifications.
- Manufacturers are exploring advanced production methods including a 5-stack W-OLED design and LG Display's "eLEAP" technology, referred to internally as "fLEAP", to achieve the brightness targets.
- Technical hurdles in manufacturing large OLED panels mean the device is not expected soon, with industry reports indicating a potential launch timeframe between 2029 and 2030.
