Apple Podcasts app gaining 'enhanced video podcast experience' in iOS 26.4
- On Monday , Apple enabled HLS video testing in developer betas of iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4 and visionOS 26.4 and said Apple Podcasts will gain an integrated video experience this spring.
- Facing rising video consumption on rivals like YouTube, Spotify and Netflix, Apple pushes video to compete for podcast mindshare as YouTube reports over 1 billion monthly viewers and Spotify’s video shows grew more than 90%.
- Using its HLS protocol, the Apple Podcasts app lets users switch between audio and video, use horizontal full display, picture-in-picture, and download episodes for offline viewing.
- Partner hosting providers and ad networks will enable creators to insert dynamic video ads, while Apple will charge ad networks an impression-based fee later this year but not creators or hosting providers.
- Apple's Services division generated $30 billion last quarter, while Edison Research found about 37% of people over age 12 watch video podcasts monthly, more than 20 years after Apple first supported podcasts via iTunes.
