Apple Alleges OpenAI Employee Accessed Circuit Plans After Joining Startup

On Monday, Apple filed a court brief accusing the ChatGPT-maker of destroying crucial evidence, claiming former engineer Chang Liu downloaded a confidential circuit schematic and used it in his work.
More than 400 former Apple employees joined OpenAI, escalating tensions between the companies two years after they forged a partnership to boost ChatGPT's reach and help Apple advance in AI.
OpenAI denied the allegations Monday, contending Apple encourages employees to mix personal and work files, making separation difficult. CEO Sam Altman's AI lab argued the lawsuit aims to discourage departures.
Liu claimed his post-departure file access was purely to assist former Apple colleagues, while Tang Tan, who spent 24 years at Apple, said he returned all prototypes and retained only non-confidential materials.
OpenAI has pushed to have the case dismissed, asserting Apple cannot use its own internal policies to blame others, as the dispute continues in District Court in California.
