Appeal Court upholds 10 years imprisonment for Ex-NEXIM Bank MD Orya
The appellate panel said prosecutors proved Orya diverted N2.4 billion through fraudulent loan awards and affirmed the lower court’s 10-year sentence.
- On Tuesday, the Court of Appeal in Abuja dismissed an appeal by former Nigeria Export-Import Bank Managing Director Roberts Orya, upholding his 10-year prison sentence for fraud.
- In February, the Federal Capital Territory High Court convicted Orya on 49 counts of obtaining money by false pretenses and forgery after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission arraigned him in 2021.
- Prosecutors alleged Orya diverted N2.4 billion from NEXIM Bank through fraudulent loan awards to Treasure Mix Construction Limited and Luxurium Leisure Services Limited, often using non-existent beneficiaries.
- A three-member panel led by Judge Muhammed Danjuma unanimously affirmed the conviction, dismissing the appeal as "devoid of any merit" and confirming the 10-year jail term.
- Appointed in 2009 by then-President Umaru Yar'Adua and reappointed by President Goodluck Jonathan, Orya led the government-owned development institution until 2016 to support Nigeria's non-oil export sector.
