Apex edges Big Ranger by a nose in Hambletonian-record time
Apex earned trainer Marcus Melander and driver Dexter Dunn their first Hambletonian wins after a photo finish and a stakes-record 1:49.2.
On Saturday, Apex won the $1 million Hambletonian Stakes at the Meadowlands, holding off favorite Big Ranger by a nose in a stakes-record 1:49.2.
Trainer Marcus Melander and driver Dexter Dunn earned their first Hambletonian victories with the win, capping Melander's four second-place finishes in the classic including three of the past four years.
Earlier in the day, Melander-trained Nezuko Kamado won the Hambletonian Oaks, making Melander the fourth trainer to sweep both events in one year. Dunn became the first driver since 2003 to win both the Meadowlands Pace and the Hambletonian.
"He has the will to win, and he put his nose first," Melander said. The 2025 Dan Patch Award winner has now won 10 of 14 career races, earning $1.61 million for owners Jeff Snyder, S R F Stable, and Steve Stewart.
Sent off as the 5-2 second choice, Apex paid $7.80 to win. His final time of 1:49.2 set the track record for a 3-year-old trotter and was only one-fifth of a second off the world record.
