APEC summit adopts declarations on AI and demographic change

APEC leaders endorsed initiatives to address AI growth and demographic shifts, with the region representing 50% of global trade, officials said.

  • On Saturday, the APEC summit in Gyeongju concluded with Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders adopting a joint leaders' declaration including an Artificial Intelligence Initiative and the APEC Framework for Cooperation on Population Structure Changes.
  • South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Nov 1 said Seoul proposed the APEC AI Initiative and a framework for cooperation on population structure changes to address a demographic crisis.
  • On Oct 31, he met Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang, leading to partnerships with South Korean companies and AI literacy discussions involving the Private Sector Advisory Council.
  • Governments at the summit signalled immediate steps, with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. saying Saturday the Philippine government will adopt AI `as much as we can, as soon as we can` and proposed a global AI organization.
  • Given the APEC region accounts for 50% of global trade and 61% of the world's gross domestic product, South Korea's AI ambitions and lowest birth rate in 2024 shape the regional agenda ahead of China, Shenzhen hosting next year.
