AP Decision Notes: What to expect in North Dakota’s state primary
Fargo will elect a new mayor and voters will decide a ballot measure that would limit future constitutional amendments to a single subject.
On Tuesday, North Dakota voters will head to the polls for a state primary featuring contests for legislative seats and a mayoral race in Fargo to succeed term-limited incumbent Tim Mahoney.
North Dakota, one of the nation's most reliably Republican-voting states, uniquely requires no voter registration, allowing any eligible citizen to participate in either party's primary.
Polls close at 7 p.m. local time, though results will be released across different time zones; the AP Decision Team will track vote tallies for several state and legislative offices throughout the night.
Recounts for North Dakota primaries are automatic if the vote margin is 1% or less of the votes cast for the top vote-getter, according to state rules.
With slightly more than half of the state's 47 Senate and 94 House seats up for election, results will shape the legislature 147 days before the midterm general election.
