Call to Strip Arts Institutions of Funding over Antisemitism Raises Alarm Bells
AUSTRALIA, JUL 21 – Australia's plan to adopt the IHRA definition has triggered debate over its impact on free speech and criticism of Israel amid a reported 316% rise in antisemitic incidents, officials say.
- Earlier this month, Jillian Segal delivered a national plan addressing a surge in antisemitic incidents, outlining measures against arson attacks, assaults and doxxing.
- The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definition was adopted in 2016 as an educational data-collection tool, serving as a working guide to anti-Jewish racism and is non-legally binding.
- More than 30 democratic governments and bodies have endorsed the IHRA definition, all 39 Australian universities have adopted it and both the 2021 Coalition and Labor governments backed it.
- Amnesty International warns the plan 'threatens people’s rights to freedom of expression and assembly', and some Jewish voices argue it blurs criticism of Israel with antisemitism.
- Next month, the Islamophobia report is scheduled for release, and several pro-Palestinian voices have faced penalties including changes to Venice Biennale invitations.

Councilwoman Inna Vernikov and Stefanik ha…

Defining antisemitism is no threat to free speech. Without a definition, we are adrift
The IHRA working definition of antisemitism is a lighthouse, not a bludgeon. Antisemitism envoy Jillian Segal has called for punitive action when patterned institutional antisemitism is not dealt with.
A project by the Institute for New Social Plastics, docked at the Munich Kammerspiele, wants to advise institutions across Bavaria on the topic of anti-Semitism. A recent incident at the same theatre shows how the problem is currently. Cultural scientist Stella Leder classifys it.
