France to Start Covering Cost of Weight-Loss Drugs for Obese Patients
The 65% subsidy will ease access to drugs that cost patients about 300 euros a month, officials said.
- On Thursday, Health Minister Stephanie Rist announced that France will begin partially reimbursing Wegovy and Mounjaro for severely obese patients, with coverage taking effect by mid-June.
- Patients previously paid around €300 monthly out-of-pocket for the injections, as Wegovy and Mounjaro remained available by prescription since 2024 without state reimbursement coverage.
- The reimbursement covers 65 percent for individuals with a BMI of at least 35 and one comorbidity, or a BMI of at least 40; Rist said supplemental insurance will cover 100 percent for most eligible patients.
- "For us, this is excellent news," Anne-Sophie Joly, president of the National Collective of Obesity Associations, told AFP, noting that disadvantaged families struggled to afford the monthly medication.
- "We are the first country in the European Union to provide reimbursement for patients who need it, under general law, on a permanent basis," Rist said, potentially assisting up to one million of the estimated 18 percent obese population.
