Anthropic’s Mythos shows need to ‘come to grips’ with AI risks: BoC governor

Central bankers and major lenders are assessing whether the new model could speed discovery and exploitation of software flaws, officials said.

  • Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem warned Friday that global financial systems must "come to grips" with cybersecurity risks posed by Anthropic's new AI model, Mythos.
  • San Francisco-based Anthropic restricted public access to Mythos, which can autonomously identify and exploit software vulnerabilities faster than human researchers, to prevent potential security breaches.
  • On the sidelines of International Monetary Fund meetings in Washington, Macklem discussed the model with Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, while Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne consulted Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
  • Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon met with Anthropic officials Tuesday to discuss protecting Canadian institutions, following separate reviews by the Canadian Financial Sector Resiliency Group earlier this week.
  • Macklem emphasized that policy-makers must establish ongoing cybersecurity protections, as whether it is Mythos or other evolving technologies, the ability to exploit vulnerabilities "puts a premium" on vigilance.
