- On Friday, former Mudarangadi Gram Panchayat president David D'Souza, 55, was shot dead by two motorcycle-borne assailants in Pilar, Karnataka, near Francis Xavier Church around 3:30 pm.
- D'Souza was a prominent businessman, contractor, and active Congress worker in the region. Police records show 14 cases were registered against the former president.
- CCTV footage shows an assailant approaching D'Souza from behind and firing three rounds before fleeing on a motorcycle. Udupi Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar said investigators will use the footage and scientific evidence to identify suspects.
- Preliminary investigation revealed a financial dispute as the motive. This killing marks the second such incident in Udupi district this week, following the July 31 alleged shooting of businessman Richard Mascarenhas by Derrick Crasta in Kundapur.
- Police personnel from Shirva and Padubidri stations have launched efforts to trace the assailants. Authorities requisitioned scene-of-crime and dog squad personnel to assist with the ongoing investigation.
