Woman Pleads Guilty to Smuggling Scheme Involving THC-Laced Candy to Sedate Children
Federal prosecutors say the smuggling ring moved children ages 5 to 13 and used THC-infused candy to keep them sedated.
- On Tuesday, El Paso, Texas resident Dianne Guadian pleaded guilty to four counts of aiding and abetting human smuggling that allegedly used THC-laced candy to sedate unaccompanied migrant children transported from Mexico into the United States.
- Guadian and three others smuggled unaccompanied children aged 5 to 13 from Ciudad Juarez into the United States by presenting false identification to Customs and Border Protection officers while keeping minors sedated with THC-infused candy.
- Assistant Attorney General Tysen Duva described the operation as "serious and dangerous conduct," noting one child required hospitalization for THC poisoning after becoming ill during a smuggling attempt.
- Guadian faces a mandatory minimum of five years and a maximum sentence of 15 years in federal prison, while co-defendant Manuel Valenzuela was sentenced to five years on July 1 for his role.
- No sentencing date has been scheduled for Guadian, according to the Justice Department, following her guilty plea to the smuggling charges.
