Annual Burn Camp for B.C. Kids Kicks Off
The free camp gives 59 burn survivors ages 8 to 18 outdoor activities and mentorship from firefighters, doctors, nurses and former campers.
- On Sunday, July 19, Langley Firefighters IAFF Local 4550 union president Jordan Sparrow hosted a kickoff celebration at McLeod Athletic Park in Langley for 59 young burn survivors launching the 33rd annual Burn Camp.
- Organized by the BC Professional Fire Fighters' Burn Fund, the week-long camp runs until July 24 at the Cheakamus Centre in Squamish, featuring free activities including swimming, hiking, and a polar bear dip for youth aged 8 to 18.
- Ten former campers returned as junior counsellors supporting current participants, while many counselors are firefighters who were burn survivors themselves helping youth learn to be "proud of the scars," Sparrow said.
- Sparrow praised Township Mayor Eric Woodward and community groups including Save-On-Foods for their support, while Local 4550 presented the Burn Fund with a $14,550 donation to assist with camp costs.
- "It is very meaningful for them," said Todd Schierling, president of the BC Professional Fire Fighters' Burn Fund, noting the program aims to help survivors navigate challenges and overcome their injuries.
