Ann Widdecombe murder 'politically and ideologically motivated', court hears
Prosecutors say Joshua Kerry’s murder charge is tied to a second terrorism count because the killing was politically and ideologically motivated.
- On Friday, the Old Bailey joined two charges against Joshua Kerry, 28, accused of murdering Ann Widdecombe and preparing acts of terrorism, with prosecutors arguing the cases are "inextricably linked" and "politically and ideologically motivated."
- Kerry allegedly held a "particular hostility" toward Reform, conducting "online reconnaissance" of prominent figures and attempting to break into Nigel Farage's South London home on April 19, 2025, prosecutors alleged.
- Widdecombe, 78, was found dead in July after being struck 21 times with a hammer at her Haytor, Devon, home, while prosecutors claim Kerry "had an extreme left wing and/or anti-establishment mindset."
- Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb remanded Kerry in custody after he appeared via video link from HMP Belmarsh, with defense counsel Nicholas Lumley KC stating the defense will contest all charges.
- The court set a five-week trial for June 8 next year, with the next procedural hearing scheduled for January 29.
