Angel Martinez Hits Leadoff Homer, Parker Messick Has Solid Outing in Guardians' 4-2 Win over Angels
Parker Messick and Reid Detmers square off as Cleveland tries to close out the series and the Angels seek to avoid a sweep.
On Wednesday, the Cleveland Guardians completed a three-game series sweep of the Los Angeles Angels with a 4-2 victory at Progressive Field. Rookie pitcher Parker Messick anchored the win while Angel Martinez sparked the offense with a leadoff home run.
Martinez hit his first career leadoff homer off Reid Detmers, setting the tone early. He and Jose Ramirez combined to score three of Cleveland's four runs while stealing four bases throughout the matinee.
Rookie Parker Messick earned the win, allowing two runs over 6 2/3 innings while striking out seven. Closer Cade Smith secured the victory by striking out the side in the ninth for his 13th save in 15 opportunities.
This win extends the Guardians' home record against Los Angeles to 30-4 since 2015. Cleveland maintains its standing in the AL Central with a 23-21 record overall.
Following Thursday's off day, the Guardians host the Cincinnati Reds on Friday to begin a three-game series. RHP Tanner Bibee will take the mound for Cleveland in the opener.
