Andy Burnham the clear favourite for Labour leader, poll of party members suggests
A YouGov survey of 706 members found 59% would back the Greater Manchester mayor, while 37% chose the Prime Minister.
A YouGov poll of 706 Labour members conducted 14–16 May found 59% would support Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham over Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who received 37% backing.
The poll followed Burnham clearing selection to run in the Makerfield by-election, a move he described as a willingness to "fight to the highest level" to lead the party.
Hypothetical contests show Wes Streeting loses by wide margins to Burnham , Angela Rayner , and Ed Miliband , indicating widespread party support for alternative leadership.
Streeting has called for a "proper contest" to replace Starmer, though 57% of members believe the former health secretary was wrong to resign his Cabinet position.
Labour members surveyed doubt the party can win re-election if Starmer remains in charge, yet believe victory is possible if Burnham takes over, reflecting significant doubt regarding the incumbent's electability.
