Andy Burnham Devolution Claims ‘Unravelling’ Due to Indyref Opposition, SNP Says
Burnham said he will not consider another vote and plans to expand devolution instead, as SNP leaders press for a Section 30 order.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister-in-waiting Andy Burnham told Scottish Labour MPs he is "not willing to consider" granting a second Scottish independence referendum.
Burnham has pledged to increase devolution across the UK, proposing a "Number 10 North" base in Manchester to redistribute power and achieve the "biggest rebalancing of power our country has seen."
The Scottish National Party fell seven seats short of the 65 required for a majority in May's election, with their constituency vote share falling 9.5% to 38.2%.
SNP Cabinet Secretary for Public Service Reform Ivan McKee said Burnham's promises are "unravelling," while SNP MSP David Linden accused him of "disrespecting Scottish democracy."
Expected to succeed Sir Keir Starmer as Prime Minister later this month, Burnham maintains he is "not a fan of referendums," preferring collaborative governance over divisive constitutional votes.
