Anduril's Autonomous Fury Drone Tested with Bombs and Cruise Missiles
Anduril said the Fury is undergoing ground fit checks for bombs, cruise missiles and rocket pods as the Air Force expands its mission set.
- On Tuesday at the Air, Space & Cyber Symposium, Anduril Industries revealed its YFQ-44A Fury Collaborative Combat Aircraft has begun fit checks for air-to-ground weapons, broadening the drone's mission set beyond its initial air-dominance focus.
- The YFQ-44A is one of two aircraft selected for the Air Force's CCA Increment 1 program; while the drone recently flew in formation with F-35s, the aircraft are not yet being tasked or controlled by the crewed fighters.
- Anduril is integrating 500-pound Joint Direct Attack Munitions, 250-pound Small Diameter Bombs, and low-cost cruise missiles into the Fury. Jason Levin, Anduril's senior vice president for Air Dominance and Strike, confirmed these fit checks are underway using internal funding.
- The company is now working toward what it calls "quarterback integration," enabling crewed aircraft to direct autonomous drones in combat. This capability could allow Fury to operate as an independent "weapons truck" if its air-to-air assistance is not required.
- Air Force Chief of Staff Kenneth Wilsbach confirmed the service has not decided on requirements for Increment 2, which could eventually include air-to-ground capabilities. Anduril cannot begin production work until Congress provides the necessary FY2027 procurement funding.
