Android 17 Can Copy More Data From iPhone Including Your iMessage History and Homescreen

The upgrade adds iMessage history, passwords, passkeys and eSIM transfer as Google starts rolling it out to a small share of Android 17 devices.

  • Google introduced a significant update to its Android Switch migration tool within Android 17 today, streamlining the transfer process from Apple iPhones to Android devices.
  • Wireless-First functionality eliminates the need for special cables, allowing users to transfer extensive data including SMS, MMS, RCS, iMessage history, Wi-Fi credentials, and Apple Notes attachments.
  • Paul Dunlop, Google's Product Lead for Android Onboarding and Android Settings, said the company collaborated with Apple on new APIs enabling seamless Google Account, eSIM, and in-app data transfers.
  • Dunlop says the update is rolling out to a "small percentage" of Android 17 devices, which for now means only Google Pixel phones.
  • The improvements will expand "over the coming weeks and month," with non-Pixel devices also receiving these upgraded migration features from Google.
