Andrew Garfield Has a Blunt Take on Amazon Dropping Luca Guadagnino's Artificial Intelligence Movie
Garfield said Amazon’s withdrawal made sense, and Neon has since taken the $40 million film into an awards campaign.
- On Wednesday, The Oscar-nominated Andrew Garfield addressed Amazon MGM Studios' decision to drop his upcoming film, Artificial, stating he "was and wasn't" surprised by the company's abrupt withdrawal.
- Following a $50 billion investment in OpenAI, Amazon announced the film would "be better served if it were released by a different studio," with the decision coinciding with Sam Altman's attendance at Jeff Bezos's wedding less than a year prior.
- Indie distributor Neon acquired the $40 million film earlier this month following a bidding process, committing to launch an awards campaign "to enter this year" Oscar race.
- Refusing to criticize the studio's conduct, Garfield noted that Amazon executives were "nothing but supportive and nothing but encouraging while we were making the film" under director Luca Guadagnino.
- Cooper Hoffman, who appears in the film, expressed surprise that Amazon initially pursued the project, remarking that Neon's involvement felt logical given the subject matter regarding Altman's 2023 firing and rehiring from OpenAI.
