Apple Calls OpenAI ‘Rotten To Its Core’ Over Alleged Trade Secret Theft
Apple says the defendants used confidential hardware designs and supplier information to speed OpenAI device development, and one former employee allegedly downloaded more than 1,000 pages.
- Apple filed a federal lawsuit Friday in the Northern District of California against OpenAI, chief hardware officer Tang Yew, and two former employees, Liu and Tan, alleging they stole trade secrets to accelerate consumer device development.
- The complaint alleges a "coordinated pattern of misconduct at an institutional level" involving confidential product designs and manufacturing methods. Candidates were asked to bring "Actual parts" and prototypes to OpenAI interviews for "show and tell" sessions.
- Liu worked at Apple for eight years before joining OpenAI in January 2026, then allegedly accessed network storage to download technical presentations and engineering data after failing to return a company laptop.
- The lawsuit complicates the partnership integrating ChatGPT into Siri and Apple Intelligence. Apple states the integration agreement is separate and is not being challenged by this case.
- Apple pursues injunctions and damages under the Defend Trade Secrets Act. The dispute echoes earlier technology-sector litigation: Apple sued chip startup Rivos in 2022, and Waymo sued Uber over alleged theft of self-driving technology.
