PARIS (AP) — A blistering heatwave gripped southwest France on Monday, sending thermometers soaring to 43 degrees Celsius (109.4 Fahrenheit) in parts of the Charente and Aude. Temperatures could "approach record levels" on Monday, especially in southwestern France, where twelve departments are placed in heat red alert until Tuesday.
Maximum temperatures "very frequently above 40°C" are announced by the Meteorological Service. Vigilance will remain maximum in the 12 departments of the Southwest already concerned and orange in 41 other departments.
Météo-France has extended vigilance to Tuesday 12 August in the departments concerned.
