Malcolm-Jamal Warner Was Swimming With 8-Year-Old Daughter When He Drowned
LIMÓN, COSTA RICA, JUL 20 – Malcolm-Jamal Warner drowned after being caught in a strong rip current at a beach without lifeguards, while surfers rescued his 8-year-old daughter, police and lifeguards said.
- On July 20, 'The Cosby Show' alum Malcolm-Jamal Warner drowned in a rip current off Playa Cocles in Limón, Costa Rica, while with his 8-year-old daughter.
- The Caribbean Guard said Playa Grande lacked lifeguard coverage due to resource shortages, adding it is one of their `most challenging beaches` with signs warning of `danger of death due to drowning` and that resources moved to Playa Negra and Chiquita following recent spikes.
- A surfer used his board to bring Warner’s daughter to safety while a volunteer lifeguard pulled Warner and another surfer ashore, where he received 45 minutes of CPR but could not be revived.
- The Forensic Pathology Department confirmed his death was an accidental asphyxiation by submersion, and his daughter was dragged to safety, though Warner was pronounced dead at the scene.
- The Caribbean Guard allocated resources to Playa Negra and Chiquita after recent incidents, and it appealed to national and regional governments for `strong support` to minimise drownings going forward.
