Amtrak cancels Florida auto train service as a wildfire disrupts routes
Amtrak is offering limited bus service and refunds as 2 large fires force Silver Meteor, Floridian and Auto Train changes, officials said.
- Two large brush fires burning along the eastern border of Putnam and Clay counties, Florida, forced Amtrak to modify several train routes on Monday. The Florida Forest Service estimated the total blaze at 2,700 acres.
- The Railroad Complex Fire in Putnam County covers 1,000 acres and remains 5% contained, while the Crews Road Fire in Clay County spans 1,700 acres with 0% containment. Jacksonville Forestry Center crews are actively battling both blazes.
- Train 98, part of the Silver Meteor service, remains stopped north of DeLand with 232 passengers onboard. Amtrak confirmed the halt was "for the safety of our passengers" as crews work to resume service.
- Amtrak canceled Auto Train service and adjusted Floridian and Silver Meteor routes to terminate in Savannah and Jacksonville. Limited bus transportation is being provided between Miami and Jacksonville for affected customers.
- The National Weather Service warned that gusty, low-humidity air across Central Florida may create high fire danger on Tuesday. Amtrak continues working with host railroad partner CSX to monitor the active fires.
