Govt Plans 44 Airports for Hub and Spoke Flights to Boost Global Connectivity

Air India said the service offers single-ticket international connections for Punjab travelers and lets them clear immigration and baggage at Amritsar.

  • On Tuesday, Air India launched its Easy Connect service from Amritsar, linking Punjab to 27 global destinations through Delhi, an initiative inaugurated by Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu.
  • Civil Aviation Secretary Samir Kumar Sinha announced the national Hub and Spoke rollout, designed to shift long-haul traffic through domestic hubs like Delhi rather than overseas airports.
  • Under the program, passengers clear immigration and check baggage at Amritsar, enabling seamless transfers through Delhi without rechecking luggage. P Balaji, Group Head of Governance, Risk, Compliance and Corporate Affairs at Air India, said the service allows travellers to begin journeys "from their home city without any hassle."
  • Local aviation groups have argued the plan "weakens Punjab's push for direct international flights"; Gunbir Singh, president of the Dilbir Foundation, warned Sri Guru Ram Das Ji International Airport is being reduced to "a domestic spoke of the Delhi hub."
  • In the coming weeks, Air India will expand Easy Connect flights to Ahmedabad, Goa, and Kochi, as the government aims to develop 100 airports and 200 heliports in 10 years to serve a New India.
