At least 100 killed in Nigerian airstrike on Zamfara market, Amnesty says
Amnesty said dozens were injured and many victims were women and girls, renewing calls for an independent investigation into military airstrikes.
On Sunday, a Nigerian military airstrike hit the crowded Tumfa market in Zamfara, killing at least 100 civilians, according to Amnesty International's report released Tuesday.
The strike marks the second such incident in a month, following an April airstrike in Jilli that killed around 200 civilians, as Nigeria's military battles northwest banditry and a 17-year Islamist insurgency.
Witnesses observed military jets hovering at midday before returning two hours later to strike the market, with many victims women and girls now receiving treatment in Zurmi and nearby Shinkafi hospitals.
Amnesty called the airstrikes unlawful, stating, "This pattern of human rights violation is increasingly becoming the norm, with villagers at the receiving end of atrocities by both armed groups, bandits and the military," though the military has previously denied targeting civilians.
The incident has sparked urgent calls for an independent investigation into military engagement rules, as residents expressed increasing concern regarding civilian deaths from military operations in northern regions.
