UN rapporteur calls for global action to stop ‘genocide’ in Gaza
GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE, JUL 15 – EU foreign ministers chose not to suspend the agreement despite Israel's violations and over 58,000 Palestinian deaths in Gaza, with nearly 29% of Israeli exports going to the EU.
- On Tuesday, UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese called for EU member states to suspend all cooperation with Israel amid the ongoing Gaza conflict.
- Her statement came in the aftermath of an attack by Hamas on Israel in 2023 and the ensuing Israeli military actions in Gaza, which according to Gaza’s health ministry, have resulted in the deaths of over 58,000 Palestinians.
- EU foreign ministers met in Brussels to consider measures including suspending the EU-Israel Association Agreement, which grants Israel preferential trade access and covers human rights obligations.
- Colombian Vice Minister Mauricio Jaramillo said the Bogota meeting of 30 countries, including Qatar and Turkey, will discuss diplomatic and judicial measures to pressure Israel to cease attacks, while some experts question their leverage.
- The calls to suspend ties reflect concerns that continuing trade with Israel amid alleged violations risks complicity and sends a dangerous message that atrocity crimes will go unpunished.
