Amid strike threat, Fin Secy Sanjay Lohia calls bank chiefs' meet to ensure services

The ministry urged banks to prepare contingency plans and keep essential services running as unions press for a five-day banking week.

  • From September 28 to 30, 2026, the United Forum of Bank Unions will hold a three-day nationwide strike after conciliation meetings failed to resolve demands. This follows weekend holidays, creating potential for five consecutive days of service disruption.
  • Representing around 90% of the banking workforce, the UFBU seeks immediate implementation of a five-day banking week pending since the 2024 wage settlement. Additional demands include pension updates, a uniform dearness allowance formula, and an option to switch from the National Pension System to the Old Pension Scheme .
  • To mitigate service gaps, the Ministry of Finance directed all Public Sector Banks and Regional Rural Banks to operate normally on Sunday, September 27. Banks urged customers to complete branch transactions in advance and use digital channels including UPI, mobile banking, and ATMs.
  • Coinciding with the half-yearly closing on September 30, the strike threatens treasury and market operations during a sensitive financial period. While physical branch services face disruption, digital facilities and automated machines will remain available for routine customer transactions.
  • Negotiations remain stalled, with the UFBU warning of an indefinite strike starting October 26 if demands remain unaddressed. The government kept the performance-linked incentive scheme in abeyance but has yet to provide a timeline for the five-day banking week proposal.
