America’s fall color wave is already rolling south, and the clock is ticking
Fall color season begins in northern states and mountain areas in September, then moves south and downhill through October and early November.
Peak color at any destination lasts about one week, so travelers may miss it if they arrive at the wrong time.
The color wave starts in the far north and at higher elevations because shorter days and cooler temperatures trigger the change there first.
The Old Farmer’s Almanac’s 2026 forecast expects most destinations to reach peak color near historical averages, but recommends checking conditions during the final week before traveling.
