Americans Navigate 'Wild West' of Health Insurance Options After Dropping Obamacare Plans
About 3 million people left ACA coverage as insurers proposed another 15% premium hike for 2027, KFF said.
Nearly 3 million Americans dropped out of the Affordable Care Act marketplace this year due to sharp increases in premiums and deductibles at the beginning of 2026, reducing enrollment from 19.2 million people as of February.
Expiration of enhanced COVID-era premium tax credits contributed to sharp cost increases, while insurers proposed a median increase of about 15% for 2027, marking the second successive year of double-digit hikes according to health policy research group KFF.
Maryland resident Ryan Shapiro, 56, dropped his ACA coverage after his monthly premium was set to more than double to over $1,000, instead choosing a short-term plan costing roughly $600 a month covering hospitalization and critical illnesses.
Atlanta consultant Cristin Connelly, 53, joined Zion HealthShare in 2025 after dropping her ACA plan, paying $480 monthly for family coverage, though the program requires a $5,000 minimum spend before expenses become eligible for the community pool.
Hospital operators including Pennsylvania-based Universal Health Services, which operates more than 500 facilities, have flagged rising costs treating uninsured patients as ACA enrollment opens November 1 and runs until January 15.
