Americans don't see Supreme Court as politically neutral, Reuters/Ipsos poll finds
- A Reuters/Ipsos survey of 1,136 U.S. adults, completed last Thursday, revealed that just one in five Americans view the Supreme Court as unbiased, while a majority of 58% rejected this view.
- This perception follows major rulings in recent years, including the June 2022 decision overturning Roe v. Wade and cases about transgender medical care and birthright citizenship challenges.
- The poll indicated that overall favorable opinions of the Supreme Court have fallen to 44%, including support from about two-thirds of Republicans and just over one-quarter of Democrats, while 53% of respondents favor laws that restrict medical treatments for transgender minors.
- Support for terminating birthright citizenship was indicated by just under a quarter of those surveyed, a policy move initiated by Trump’s executive order in January and subsequently contested in court by 22 states and various advocacy organizations citing the 14th Amendment.
- The court is expected to issue rulings soon on the Texas age-verification law for pornography access and other high-profile cases, with these decisions likely affecting similar state laws and public opinion.
