American Kyle Kirkwood Wins Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington, D.C.
Kirkwood led 128 of 147 laps and finished 3.09 seconds ahead of Christian Lundgaard in the inaugural street race, officials said.
On Sunday, Aug. 23, 2026, American driver Kyle Kirkwood won the inaugural Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington, D.C., leading 128 of 147 laps on the 1.7-mile street course.
President Donald Trump and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser launched the event to celebrate America's 250th birthday, though 140,000 spectators brought traffic delays, business closures, and pauses at Washington National Airport.
Kirkwood, racing for Andretti Global, took the checkered flag ahead of second-place Christian Lundgaard and third-place Will Power, while championship contender David Malukas retired early after crashing into a wall while running 18th.
With three races remaining, Kirkwood's victory narrowed his deficit to championship leader Alex Palou to 91 points, as Palou suffered a drive-through penalty and an on-track collision that damaged his vehicle.
While officials touted the potential for this to become an annual spectacle, IndyCar has no plans to return to Washington for another race, though the event featured seven military flyover waves capped by a B-2 bomber.
