‘American Idol’s Keyla Richardson Planning Huge Career Shift After 3rd Place Finish
Richardson says new opportunities may force her to leave teaching as she prepares live shows and new music beyond gospel.
Following her third-place finish on American Idol Season 24, Keyla Richardson plans to pursue a full-time music career, shifting away from her previous work as a music teacher.
During the show, EGOT award-winner Jennifer Hudson mentored Richardson, recognizing shared drive and passion for singing that deeply touched both women's hearts.
Richardson credits her 9-year-old son, Drew, as her main inspiration and protector, saying "In my career now, he's an inspiration to me." Drew captured hearts during the competition.
Stepping away from her teaching role, Richardson plans to expand beyond gospel roots into pop, country, and soul music. She explained, "I'm just open to more."
Richardson will perform at the Saenger Theatre in Pensacola on July 25, though she noted she will never forget her gospel origins. "That's why sometimes you'll see me at a set and I might just break out into a worship song," she added.
