Groundbreaking US Astronaut Christina Koch Wins Top Spanish Award
The $50,000 prize recognized her record-setting space career and the first woman to join a lunar mission, the jury said.
- On Wednesday, astronaut Christina Koch was named the winner of the Princess of Asturias Award for Concord, recognized for having "helped extend the frontiers of humanity" through space exploration.
- Koch, 47, was a member of The Artemis II mission in April, which completed the first lunar flyby in more than 50 years and traveled 406,771 kilometres from Earth.
- She previously set the record for the longest spaceflight by a woman at 328 days and completed the first all-female spacewalk alongside her colleague Jessica Meir.
- The €50,000 Concord Award, handed out annually by the foundation named after Princess Leonor, honors efforts reflecting "humanity's ability to overcome challenges and adversity through hard work, collaboration and empathy."
- Widely viewed as a candidate for future lunar-surface missions, Koch joins previous Concord Award recipients including Scottish charity Mary's Meals and Spanish chef Jose Andres.
