American Airlines Expands in Europe, Adding Vienna, Reykjavik and Porto
American will add seven international routes, with five on Airbus A321XLR jets that open smaller European markets and a restored Tokyo flight.
- On Thursday, American Airlines announced seven new international routes for its 2027 schedule, with three launching from its Philadelphia International Airport hub to Vienna, Porto, and Reykjavik.
- The expansion utilizes the Airbus A321XLR, enabling carriers to profitably serve midsize European markets. Brian Znotins, senior vice president of network and schedule planning, said the aircraft "opens up the menu" for smaller destinations.
- Starting March 19, Chicago to Tokyo service begins on a Boeing 787-9. Philadelphia launches routes to Porto on March 28 and Vienna on May 6, while Charlotte debuts Barcelona service on May 27.
- American's announcement follows United Airlines' 10-route unveiling on Tuesday. While United pursued secondary markets, American emphasized premium global offerings and expanded seasonal service to established European destinations.
- Capitalizing on the "coolcations" trend, American extends Vienna service through early January 2028 for holiday travelers. This strategy targets the profit gap with rivals Delta Air Lines and United.
