Japan to Launch Probe for Mars Moons in October: Space Agency

The probe will collect at least 10 grams of Phobos material and test technology for future crewed Mars missions, JAXA said.

Japan's MMX mission will launch on October 20 to collect samples from Mars's moon Phobos. The unmanned probe will stay in orbit for three years, collecting at least ten grams of material. A small rover named IDEFIX will conduct surface observations on Phobos during the mission. The spacecraft will also observe the moon Demios without landing on its surface.
